Which superstar will the St. Louis Cardinals hold onto for the foreseeable future?

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s future has been the subject of a great deal of conjecture. Despite having a poor year in 2023, the 2022 National League Most Valuable Player remains one of baseball’s best first basemen.

At the conclusion of the 2024 season, the 36-year-old will become a free agent, although there has been a lot of conjecture that a potential contract extension would be reached. Although it is a genuine possibility, both parties have stated that an extension won’t occur until the 2024 season at the very least gets underway.

Although the details of an agreement are unknown, Tim Britton of The Athletic estimated that it may cost less than $100 million and last nearly four years.

“Paul Goldschmidt, St. Louis: Four years, $97 million,” stated Britton. “Coming off one of its worst seasons in a generation probably isn’t the time for St. Louis to commit to running it back deep into the future.”

Even at 36 years old, Goldschmidt is a household name. Despite having a disappointing season the previous year, he nevertheless crushed 25 home runs and drove in 80 runs, winning the MVP title at the age of 34. Although it wasn’t as good as he had hoped, it was still a good year all around.

St. Louis is expected to be in a much better place in 2024 and if it can rebound, a solid season from Goldschmidt certainly will be a major reason why.
