Breaking: Cardinals Set To Sign $8.5 Million Marquee Hurler After Unfortunate Injury To Sonny Gray
On Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals received some disheartening news.
Early in the offseason, St. Louis made a special effort to bolster the starting rotation, and three-time All-Star Sonny Gray was undoubtedly the team’s most noteworthy acquisition.
The 34-year-old was a standout player for the Minnesota Twins in the previous season and was runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award. The team is undoubtedly thrilled about Gray, but given his hamstring issue, they could have to wait to see him return to the pitch.
Now, St. Louis will have to make some difficult choices. There are still plenty of money available for the Cardinals to spend, and some interesting players are up for grabs in free agency. But the club has made it seem like it might not be searching.
Although this is the case, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentioned Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, and Michel Lorenzen as potential candidates.
“The Cardinals will spend the next couple of days monitoring Gray’s recovery for a better sense of the injury and his healing,” Goold stated. That will also afford them time to assess whether they need to go shopping to address their pitching depth, like they did with their shortstop depth recently.
The top-tier lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery as well as pitchers seeking shorter commitments—in terms of money or years—as well as less assurance are among the many possibilities available to free agents. Following a trade to Philadelphia, Michael Lorenzen, 32, finished the previous season with a 5.51 ERA and a no-hitter in his final 11 appearances. During spring training, the Cardinals haven’t made a major free-agent pitching trade since Kyle Lohse in March 2008. A few weeks later, he began opening day and won fifteen games.”
As of the conclusion of the 2023 season, the St. Louis club is in a better position. The Cardinals’ rotation is still in doubt, but they still have a chance to make the playoffs and possibly even more. How about a little extra depth?
