Iowa football commits to 2025 tight end Eli Johnson News: Iowa announced on Wednesday that three-star tight end Eli Johnson from River Falls, Wis.
, has committed to Iowa, joining the 2025 class.
He received his sixth commitment.
This was a quick offer and commitment for the Hawkeyes, as Johnson received an offer from Iowa a few weeks ago and announced his commitment a month later.
Johnson chose the Hawkeyes over offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Minnesota and Purdue, with Wisconsin also showing interest.
Johnson, a three-star prospect, caught 17 passes for 214 yards and six touchdowns this fall.
He also plays basketball.
Johnson is Iowa’s second tight end commitment in the 2025 class and someone the Hawkeyes have been pursuing for some time.
“Eli is a very skilled and athletic pass catcher,” writes Allen Trew of 247Sports.
“The athleticism also shows on the basketball court.
He can spread out and play on the ball or in the slot, is a natural route runner, and has good ball skills as well.
Room for explosion and top end.
I think there is, but that’s it.
” It’s something that Iowa has always developed well.
He was coveted by several other Power Five programs, so I think this is a good fit and a great recruiting win.
” is highly rated.
Johnson, who has a two-sport background, boasts interesting metrics and athleticism at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and has experience playing on the defensive side of the ball.
These are the types of tight end prospects.
The Hawkeyes are looking to fill their tight end room.
“He’s big, but he’s really fast,” River Falls (Wis.
) head coach Ryan Schertz said.
“He’s also pretty nervous for a kid this big.
His athletic ability is not normally seen in men of his size.
He can play many sports on the basketball court.
Although he’s primarily a rebounder and rim protector, he does things that stand out on the basketball court from time to time.
” “All the kids that got offers from Iowa State are going to be a little excited when they watch them, they watch the NFL.
” And you see the former Iowa tight end.
That’s a pretty good recruiting pitch.
” Iowa tight ends coach Abdul Hodge continues to emerge as one of Iowa’s top recruiters.
Who else is in this class?
: Iowa State, with Johnson in the class, has four-star tight end Thomas Meyer, three-star quarterback Jimmy Sullivan, three-star Offensive lineman Joey VanWetzinga and three-star linebacker Burke Gaucher are committed.
And Carson Cooney.
