Report: Saints move ahead of Texans to sign pass rusher

Saints likely to sign pass rusher Chase Young.
Chase Young is packing his bags for the second time in five months, this time to a new NFL destination.

The former No. 2 overall selection in the 2020 draft is set to sign a one-year, $13 million contract with the New Orleans Saints, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said Monday. The whole $13 million is guaranteed, according to Rapoport. Later, the team announced the signing.

Young played the second part of the 2023 season with the San Francisco 49ers, who acquired him before the deadline in a trade with the Washington Commanders, resulting in a rental for the NFC heavyweight. The return on the deal was not huge, but it was decent enough.

to help the 49ers win the conference championship and go to Super Bowl LVIII, which they lost in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Young has 18 tackles and 3.5 sacks with the 49ers, including one sack on Patrick Mahomes in the aforementioned Super Bowl. In 2023, he tied for 18th in total QB pressures, matching former Jets pass-rushing specialist Bryce Huff, who signed a three-year, $51.5 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

Young, meanwhile, will again be forced to prove himself, taking the fast riches granted by the one-year agreement to join forces with the likes of eight-time Pro Bowler Cameron Jordan in New Orleans, where coach Dennis Allen hopes to guide.

In 2023, they will slide out of the top ten in terms of total defense. Young will have a whole season to prove he can work alongside another accomplished edge rusher after failing to satisfy the lofty expectations set by a reunion with former Ohio State colleague Nick Bosa in San Francisco.

Young’s career began on a high note in 2020, when he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year, but injuries cut short the most of his 2021 and 2022 seasons. Instead of fretting about being moved by a club in transition in 2024, he’ll start his season in New Orleans with one purpose in mind: to find quarterbacks.
