Thunder Acquires 2028 Pick Swap
Oklahoma City, February 8, 2024 — The Oklahoma City Thunder obtained a 2028 selection swap from the Dallas Mavericks in return for a 2024 first-round draft pick, Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced today.
Oklahoma City will exchange the second-least favorable of the Houston Rockets’ 2024 draft selection (top-four protected), the Los Angeles Clippers’ 2024 draft pick, the Utah Jazz’s 2024 draft pick (top-10 protected), or Oklahoma City’s own 2024 draft pick.
Thunder likely to have only one first-round pick in 2024 NBA Draft.
This time last year, the Oklahoma City Thunder had four first-round picks in the 2024 NBA Draft. Over the past nine months, the Thunder has carefully moved two of its four first-round picks away.
Sending away the two draft selections in separate transactions was an attempt to extend the franchise’s window of considerable draft capital by collecting future picks. Given that Oklahoma City is unlikely to be able to draft four players and clear roster space to bring them in next season, this was a calculated move to basically trade near-term picks for selections in the future. Furthermore, the conditions of these transactions will result in With three weeks left in the regular season, it’s becoming increasingly obvious where these picks will likely fall. And with the current state of the NBA standings, it looks the Thunder will ultimately end up with just one first-round pick in the 2024
NBA Draft. With the ninth-worst record in the NBA, it’s extremely likely that the Jazz pick falls in the top 10 and doesn’t convey to the Thunder this year. Given Oklahoma City owns the best two of the four still at this point.
