Breaking: Packers Closing In On Deal To Sign Former Fourth-Round Pick QB As Free Agent
The Green Bay Packers are researching the available quarterbacks, trying out former fourth-round pick Jacob Eason among others.
It was revealed to X by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic that Eason attended the Packers rookie minicamp. On Friday, May 3, the seasoned quarterback was present for a tryout.
Alex McGough, the third-string quarterback for the Packers, recently moved to wide receiver. The Packers may use Eason’s tryout as a practice run before selecting a more seasoned veteran for training camp.
As of the publication of this article, there was no word on Eason’s contract signing with the Packers.
Jacob Eason’s Rocky NFL Career
With Eason, there have always been moments of promise. Regretfully, he hasn’t had the desired outcome in the NFL.
In 2016, Eason was a five-star prospect and among the nation’s best high school athletes. He had the option to attend college almost anyplace, but he chose to enroll at Georgia.
Despite taking over as the Bulldogs’ starter in 2017, Eason lost his position to Jake Fromm due to an injury. Eason moved to Washington after failing to regain his job.
For Eason, the relocation to Seattle was beneficial. In 13 games, the 6’6′′ quarterback demonstrated his exceptional arm power by throwing for 3,132 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The Indianapolis Colts selected Eason in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft because of his size and arm strength. He spent one and a half seasons as Indianapolis’ backup quarterback before being cut in October 2021.
Eason has moved around the league ever since. He has spent the last two seasons with four different teams, demonstrating his tendency to jump about. When he has been on the field, it has been ugly; in two games, he has thrown two interceptions on ten pass attempts.
Eason is still making an effort to continue playing in the NFL. Even while the Packers tryout may not result in a chance to attend training camp, he might still receive a call this offseason from other organizations.
There aren’t many 6’6″ quarterbacks with rocket arms, and NFL general managers will likely keep giving Eason a shot given that he’s only 26 years old.
Green Bay’s Quarterback Situation
Green Bay’s obvious quarterback one is Jordan Love. For the backup quarterback position, an intriguing training camp competition is still developing.
The current front-runner to be the backup in 2024 is Sean Clifford. Clifford, a Penn State graduate and fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has strong offensive management skills. Despite having poor arm skill, he is a good backup due to his athleticism and football acumen.
But in this year’s selection, the Packers took a chance on another young quarterback. In the seventh round, Tulane’s Michael Pratt was picked. Despite having less-than-ideal arm strength, Pratt is a four-year starter and three-time captain who can hurl the ball all over the field.
Neither backup quarterback has a great arm, but both bring enough to the table to make this year’s training camp battle an interesting one. The preseason games in August will give Packers fans a good idea of who will earn the backup job, and who will likely be sent to the practice squad.
