OFFICIAL: Texans trade for Bengals star running back Joe Mixon.
After missing out on the Saquon Barkley sweepstakes, the Houston Texans made their own splash at the running back position by dealing for Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Mixon.
The Texans have made their first huge splash in the NFL offseason.
After losing out to the Philadelphia Eagles in the race to sign star free agent running back Saquon Barkley, the Texans turned their attention to another big back.
This time, they were successful, with the Texans agreeing to a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire explosive all-purpose running back Joe Mixon, according to various sources on Tuesday.
The Bengals have just announced the trade, making it official.
TexansDaily.com reported on Monday that the Texans had instantly moved their emphasis to Mixon as their primary running back target following Barkley’s departure and the subsequent acquisition of Devin Singletary.
Mixon, who was expected to become a free agent this summer, was never officially released by the Bengals, allowing the Texans to finalize the transaction.
In exchange, the Texans will send the Bengals a conditional seventh-round pick.
Mixon now joins a formidable offensive line in Houston, lead by quarterback C.J. Stroud and receivers Dell and Nico, whom he should be familiar with from his time with the Bengals, when he played alongside Joe Burrow, Ja’marr Chase, Tyler Boyd, and Higgins.
The 27-year-old running back is coming off his fourth season of rushing for more than 1,000 yards. Mixon concluded his final season with the Cincinnati Bengals with 1,034 yards running on 257 attempts and nine touchdowns.
Mixon had his best season in 2021, when he carried for a career-high 1,205 yards on 292 runs and 13 touchdowns. His performance propelled the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI, where they lost 23-20 to the Los Angeles Rams. Mixon’s only Pro Bowl appearance came with the Bengals during their Super Bowl run.
