Report: Birmingham City key man send farewell massage as he set to join Madrid

Marc Roberts shares an emotional parting message after leaving Birmingham City.
Marc Roberts scored seven goals in 197 appearances for Birmingham City over a seven-year period.
Marc Roberts thanked Birmingham City fans for their support in a goodbye speech after seven years at St Andrew’s.

The veteran defender is one of five senior players dismissed by the Blues at the end of their contracts. Neil Etheridge, Gary Gardner, Ivan Sunjic, and Scott Hogan have all departed.

The Blues have given new contracts to John Ruddy and Lukas Jutkiewicz, while they have exercised their option to extend Keshi Anderson’s deal by another year. A number of young people, including Marcel Oakley and Tate Campbell, have been released.

Roberts, 33, made 197 appearances for Blues in all competitions since joining from Barnsley in 2017. The final of Roberts’ seven goals in a Blues shirt came in a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough at The Riverside in October 2021.

Roberts wrote on Instagram after the Blues confirmed his departure: “Now that it’s official, I’ll be leaving the Blues this summer. I’d want to thank everyone who’s been involved in my time at the club, staff and players past and present, and ALL the managers.

“We had a rough time together, but it was unforgettable. I can guarantee you that we have shared a lot more than seven years of football.

Thank you to all of the fans for your incredible support during these difficult times. You always showed up! Thank you for any praise when earned and criticism when necessary; football is a vast game of opinions, which is why we love it, and I would never begrudge anyone expressing theirs! I really wish you all good luck in the future!

“I’ve relished every minute of representing this club everytime I crossed the line, and while it hasn’t ended as anyone would have desired, I’m confident the club is destined for a top-tier future under the current ownership. Here’s hoping for a much brighter future for everyone concerned.

“To my wife and family, I would like to express my gratitude for your unwavering support over the years and for helping me through difficult times. We moved down here together, just the two of us, and we are leaving with a beautiful family (complete with two little brummies).”
