Breaking: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Closing On Deal To Sign $118 Million QB
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a significant commitment to quarterback Baker Mayfield this offseason, but could consider one of the most experienced veteran signal callers available as an insurance policy.
Mayfield and the Buccaneers reached to terms on a three-year contract worth $100 million, one of several landmark moves coordinated by general manager Jason Licht, which also included re-signing Mike Evans and making Antoine Winfield Jr. the highest-paid defensive back in the league.
However, there is significant value in a seasoned backup quarterback, and Licht may look to sign one of the best available as the season approaches.
Is Ryan Tannehill a Fit for Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Ryan Tannehill, who was replaced by Will Levis by the Tennessee Titans, is looking for a home before the 2024 season begins, and may be a valuable addition to the Buccaneers’ quarterback room alongside Mayfield.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen compiled a list of the best fits for the top remaining free agents, which included Tannehill signing with the Buccaneers.
According to Bowen of ESPN, Tannehill is likely to wait for an opportunity at camp. “But if we’re looking for prospective team/scheme fits, the Bucs work. Currently, Kyle Trask and John Wolford are the backup quarterbacks behind Baker Mayfield. A healthy Ryan Tannehill would benefit from Liam Coen’s planned emphasis on play-action in the passing game.
“In 10 games with the Titans last season, Tannehill completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.” Put Tampa Bay on your list of teams to monitor this summer with Tannehill.
Tannehill’s mobility and experience could make it a seamless transition if Mayfield goes down at some point during the season, and his veteran presence could benefit Trask’s development.
