Coventry City announce their first summer addition, a ‘talented and athletic’ player who joins on a long-term contract.
Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues boss Mark Robins makes his first official signing of the summer.
Coventry City have confirmed their first official signing of the summer, Raphael Borges Rodrigues, whom Mark Robins regards as a ‘talented and athletic’ winger.
The 20-year-old joins the Sky Blues from Australian club Macarthur FC for an unknown price, which is subject to EFL and FA approval. He has agreed to a four-year contract with the Championship club, which will begin next month and extend until June 2028.
“We are really pleased to welcome Rapha to the club,” remarked the City manager. “He is a talented and athletic winger who just had a successful 2023/24 season.
“Rapha has some great attributes and a willingness to work and learn, and I’m sure we will enjoy his development during his time with us.”
Rodrigues, a Brazilian-Australian, was born in the Netherlands and has represented Australia at the youth level since moving there when he was five.
He began his career at Melbourne City Academy in 2017. Raphael made his Melbourne City debut in the Melbourne Derby in June 2021, then appeared on the bench in the 2021 A-League Grand Final before scoring his first professional goal in March 2022.
He signed a two-year contract with fellow A-League team Macarther FC in June 2023, after playing 17 games and scoring two goals for Melbourne City. Last season was his most productive season ever, with six goals in 33 appearances for the Sydney-based club.
Rodrigues, a right-footed player, has primarily played on the left side but can also play on the right. Ephron Mason-Clark, a muscular winger signed from Peterborough United in January, is anticipated to compete on the left for the Sky Blues next season, implying Rodrigues may offer competition for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto on the right.
