Breaking: Sabres closing in on deal to sign 6′5″ , 220 lb free agent center
The Buffalo Sabres’ center position is widely seen as a weakness. According to sources, they are seeking a third-line option for Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens. Quinton Byfield is one player they would consider trading for.
Byfield played for the Los Angeles Kings past season, scoring 20 goals and 35 assists. Only Thompson has more goals at the position for Buffalo, while no one else on the roster had more assists. Byfield had a +/- of 19 for the season total.Peyton Krebs was the only Sabre with a favorable result.
Byfield was taken second overall in the 2020 NHL Draft and has made an impression since joining the league. He may be a high-profile player to sign, but Buffalo requires more prolific scorers and Thompson needs more help at center.
The primary concern for the Sabres is that Byfield is a restricted free agent this offseason. If Buffalo gives him a deal and he accepts, the Kings will have the option to match the offer. It’s also possible that if Byfield signs a bridge contract with the Kings this summer rather than a long-term deal, Buffalo will consider him an unrestricted free agency or trade candidate next year.
Los Angeles did fall 4-1 to the Stanley Cup Finals-bound Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the playoffs this year. However, finding guys with playoff experience will be critical for a Buffalo squad aiming to break its 13-year playoff skid.
Byfield recorded four assists in five postseason games. He also won three out of the four faceoffs he faced in the five games. A tough and up-and-coming athlete may make a splash for Buffalo, but he could be just what the team needs.
