Breaking: Rotherham United closing in on deal to sign 30-year-old soon to be free agent
Rotherham United currently lead the race to sign Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Marko Marosi on a free transfer this summer, according to a report via the Shropshire Star.
The Slovakian shot-stopper is available on a free transfer with his contract at League One rivals Shrewsbury Town close to expiring and it appears as though Marosi could be on his way to the Millers.
How did Marosi fair last season?
Marosi, who joined Shrewsbury from Coventry City in 2021, quickly became the club’s top player and was heavily featured last season.
Marosi made 48 appearances in all competitions for the club last season, keeping 11 clean sheets for the League One side and helping the team remain in the third division for another season.
Rotherham’s previous number one, Viktor Johansson, has departed to join Stoke City for an undisclosed amount. Shrewsbury Town has been linked with many goalkeepers to replace Marosi.
A transfer reunion
Marosi’s move to Rotherham United would reunite him with former Coventry City captain Liam Kelly, who has already joined the Millers under new manager Steve Evans, along with former Sky Blues forward Jonson Clarke-Harris and several other recruits.
Rotherham already has several players with promotion experience, and Marosi, who won the League One title with the Sky Blues in 2019/20, might add to that.
Can Rotherham return to the second tier?
Rotherham United had a dismal 2023/24 season, being relegated back to League One and having not won away from home in nearly two years.
However, following Steve Evans’ return last month, Rotherham have wasted no time in adding significant experience to their squad, with Joe Rafferty, Liam Kelly, and Jonson Clarke-Harris joining the League One club.
The probable arrival of Marosi would improve the club’s options between the sticks, with the shot-stopper battling with Dillon Phillips for the number one jersey next season.
