Breaking: Bills Closing In On Deal To Sign Former $61 Million 2-Time Pro Bowler to Address Compelling Need at Starting Safety
The Buffalo Bills still need to fix several issues before the start of the new season. One of the most intriguing is identifying the proper man to start at safety when the new campaign begins.
The Bills already have a few possibilities, but NFL expert Matt Holder of Bleacher Reports believes it would be in their best interests to explore adding a more respected name to the mix.
Buffalo Bills Urged to Sign Justin Simmons
The Bills need to address a huge hole at safety after losing Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer this summer. There are a number of players on the current roster who might step up and potentially take that slot, but Holder believes that a player like Justin Simmons would be a better fit for Buffalo:
“The Buffalo Bills released Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde in free agency, leaving the defense with a need at safety. Although Taylor Rapp, Mike Edwards, and youngster Cole Bishop are expected to be strong starters this year, Holder suggests exploring free agent options, such as Justin Simmons, prior to training camp.
Simmons is a two-time Pro Bowl safety, with his second nod coming this past season with the Denver Broncos. He is still a free agent as of the moment, and the Bills could do far worse than adding a tested veteran into their squad.
More Needs to Fill
Aside from Buffalo’s continued safety, Holder believes the Bills have two other key issues to overcome.
The first step is to add a seasoned linebacker to their roster. Holder contends that Matt Milano’s return from injury will most likely necessitate some form of backup plan, and the hiring of an experienced LB could be the solution to this quandary.
Second, the team will add another guard to protect star quarterback Josh Allen. Holder points out that O’Cyrus Torrence hasn’t exactly been an excellent pass protector, and that “keeping Josh Allen upright will be crucial for the team’s Super Bowl hopes, so adding another guard to the mix would be smart.”
