West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City are reportedly competing for the signing of a Sheffield Wednesday player.
West Brom are interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday offensive midfielder Josh Windass on a free transfer, Birmingham World has learned.
The 30-year-old winger was poised to sign a new contract at Hillsborough, but talks have stalled, and he is now expected to leave. Windass’ current contract ends on June 30, and several Championship clubs are interested in signing him.
It is known that West Brom are interested and have contacted the player’s representation to assess his level of interest in a move. The Baggies hope Windass can help them find a new attacking-minded midfielder who can also play on the left.\
Matt Phillips has confirmed his departure from The Hawthorns after eight years, while Adam Reach and Jovan Malcolm have been handed the exit door. Grady Diangana has also been linked with a transfer away, albeit that has yet to happen.
Birmingham battles West Brom for Windass.
According to our sister magazine The Star, local rival Birmingham are hoping to complete an audacious move for Windass. Blues have expressed an interest for some weeks, and talks are anticipated to develop in the next days. The League One team will attempt to persuade Windass to drop down a division.
It remains to be seen what the player’s choice is, but West Brom and Birmingham are not the only teams in contention. Wednesday are still attempting to persuade Windass to stay, but The Star reports that several of Albion’s Championship opponents have showed interest.
