Sad News: Driver dies after suffering severe injuries in a multi-car wreck at Eldora Speedway

A 35-year-old driver died from severe injuries sustained in a crash Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, the Ohio dirt track owned by NASCAR racer Tony Stewart.
The World 100, a late-model race, resumed after Shane Unger, a Rossburg, Ohio native, was seriously injured in a multi-car incident during a heat race. According to a news statement from Eldora Speedway, he was taken to a nearby hospital and died.

Slack informed USA TODAY Sports via email that Unger’s automobile had a HANS device, which prevents forward movement of the driver’s head and neck during a crash.

“The Unger family has conveyed their appreciation of the prayers and support expressed by the racing community and requests their privacy be respected at this time,” Slack wrote in the statement.

Fans fashioned a memorial along the outside of the track.
