Chase Mobley, a right-handed pitcher for the Florida State Seminoles, has been selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Chase Mobley attended Durant High School in Plant City, Florida, and played baseball there. It’s one of the state’s most successful programs at that level, and he drew the attention of both MLB and college scouts before deciding to pitch at Florida State.
Chase Mobley is only 18 years old and already stands six feet five and weighs 205 pounds. That’s the optimal size for a pitcher, and he uses it to consistently throw 92 or 92 miles per hour. However, he has already demonstrated the potential to throw far harder.
It also includes some terrific mobility when running on hitters. He throws a fastball, a curveball, and a slider, albeit they seem identical and he may just use one or the other in the future. In addition, he uses a split-changeup to keep batters off balance.
Florida State is wrapping up its second season under head coach Link Jarrett. The Seminoles, one of collegiate baseball’s most proud programs, had a crucial bounce-back season after missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1977. So, getting 49-17 and making it to Omaha for the College World Series was a significant accomplishment for the program.
Chase Mobley will now have to make an important decision. He can either sign and begin his career as a professional baseball player, or he can keep to his commitment and attend college to play for the Seminoles. During that period, he’d improve before perhaps entering the MLB Draft.
Scouts’ evaluations on Chase Mobley prior to the draft
According to MLB.com, Chase Mobley was ranked as the 80th-best player available in the MLB Draft.
“Mobley screams projection, with plenty of current information to pique scouts’ interest. He’s developing a good fastball, which has reached 99 mph in early outings this spring. His current speed range is 92-93 mph, with a little lower slot resulting in more movement than carry.He can go on the side of it at times, thus his breaking can be uneven. “He has a solid split-changeup with some depth,” MLB.com reported.
Mobley is a decent strike-thrower, but as with many high school arms, he prefers control over command, and scouts dislike his arm motion.
