Announcement: Commanders Closing In On Late-Round Signing For $7.63 Million ‘Disappointing’ 1st-Rounder

The Washington Commanders consider trading for Treylon Burks, despite his “disappointing” performance as a first-round selection pick.

According to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, the Tennessee Titans’ wide receiver could be a suitable trade target for the Commanders. He says, “the Commanders are a team that should be willing to give Burks a chance.” They don’t have much following Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson. When Kliff Kingsbury was the Cardinals’ head coach, they invited Burks on a pre-draft visit. He presently serves as the Commander’s offensive coordinator.

Ballentine proposed a deal in which the Commanders would trade a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Titans. Burks and a 2025 sixth-round draft pick would be sent in exchange.

The Titans may be amenable to this move because “Burks has been one of the most disappointing first-round picks from the 2022 draft class.” He had 33 receptions for 444 yards and a touchdown in his rookie season, but only 221 yards in 11 games as a sophomore.”

The guy was picked 18th overall two years ago and is expected to battle for targets this season after the Titans “made two major additions to their receiving corps when they signed Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd in free agency.”

According to Ballentine, “it would make some sense to simply move on from Burks when Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has been a more consistent fourth receiver.”

Treylon Burks a Good Fit for Kliff Kingsbury’s Offense

Trading for Burks would be a perfect fit for offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s system. The play-caller has historically favored big-bodied receivers who may be height and speed mismatches outside of the numbers.

The Arizona Cardinals’ physical wideouts, including Larry Fitzgerald, A.J. Green, and DeAndre Hopkins, utilized Kingbury’s tactics. Burks is 6’2″ and weighs 225 pounds, matching the same blueprint.

So far, he has not used his height and muscle to his advantage at the professional level. Burks has only made 53 catches, 702 yards, and two scores in two seasons at Tennessee.

Burks has struggled with injuries, including turf toe, concussions, and knee sprains, since his draft. When he is not on the treatment table, Burks has demonstrated a talent for stretching the field.

During his debut season, the 24-year-old caught a long ball while trailing the Green Bay Packers.

Kingsbury’s playbook is built by concepts aimed at ripping the top off defenses, thus the Commanders could be the perfect club to help Burks reach his full potential.

Commanders Have Room for WR Trade

It’s not like there isn’t enough room to trade for a fresh receiver. Terry McLaurin leads the depth chart, but third-year pro Jahan Dotson has struggled to produce. Burner Dyami Brown is a potential trade chip.

Adding Burks would provide Jayden Daniels, the rookie quarterback, with another promising target. According to AtoZ Sports Nashville, Burks has demonstrated “clean, fast, and explosive” performance during training camp.

With McLaurin, Burks, and third-round pick Luke McCaffrey, the Commanders have the potential to dominate on the perimeter and between the numbers.
