Trickle became a Nascar icon as much for his moniker and odd behavior as for his racing abilities.

In 1989, at the age of 48, he was elected Winton Cup Rookie of the Year, becoming the oldest driver in Cup history to do so.

Trickle raced in 2,200 races over the course of his 24-year career and is thought to have the most victories in short track racing history. Despite his multiple racing wins, Trickle has never won a Cup race.

Trickle became well-known outside of Nascar for going to considerable measures to be allowed to smoke while racing.

Former Nascar driver Geoff Bodine told the Associated Press that he was devastated by the death of his “fun, just plain fun” pal.

Bodine added, “It’s all very sad. We can not comprehend why he would do this. Hopefully, we will all understand why he did it. Something triggered him to commit suicide. The racing community is deeply disturbed by this.

Bodine described Trickle’s charisma and storytelling abilities, saying, “People everywhere recognized his name… That’s why they utilized his image in the film Days of Thunder. “He was such a character.”
Trickle was asked in an interview a few years ago how he wanted to be remembered. He said, “I simply want to be who I am and be content that I had a successful career. I’m pleased with it. I believe I made a lot of pals. He added.
