Sad news: three chiefs stars have left the team

Three guys at Chiefs training camp who aren’t likely to make the final squad
The Kansas City Chiefs have a few guys that will clearly not make the cut after training camp closes.
The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the NFL’s most divisive teams, and they can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight.

Sometimes it’s their kicker making comments that irritate half of the country. Other times, their quarterback’s family causes havoc on others around them. Then there’s the times when their star tight end makes headlines for dating a music megastar.

But it’s almost time for football. Actual football. There will be no more off-the-field headlines dictating what happens on the field. And the Chiefs are assembling an impressive roster ahead of the season.

Unfortunately, not all players at training camp will make the regular season squad. A few players are almost guaranteed to be cut in the coming weeks.

3. DT Fabian Lovett
Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs have eight defensive tackles on their roster. I understand that they operate a 4-3, and depth at the position is crucial.

However, the team is likely to eliminate three or four of these defensive tackles before training camp ends. There’s no reason to have that much depth in one place.

The Chiefs defensive line room is extremely top heavy. They have some serious talent at the top of the room, but as you move down the depth chart, the talent depletes quickly. Fabien Lovett Sr., a Florida State product, ranks at the bottom of the defensive line depth chart.
Lovett is too large to transition to defensive end and just not skilled enough to stay in the Chiefs’ defensive line room.

They loved his potential as a player enough to sign him as a rookie this year, but he hasn’t impressed in camp thus far.

Barring injuries, I can’t envision Lovett being on Kansas City’s first 53-man roster this season. He’s a nice match for their practice squad, however.

2. TE Baylor Cupp.
Looking at the Chiefs’ tight end room, Travis Kelce is an obvious starter, as he has been for the past decade. However, injuries happen, and Andy Reid prefers to use two tight end sets, so depth at the position is critical.

1. QB Ian Book Unlike some teams, there is no quarterback battle in Kansas City and will not be for as long as Patrick Mahomes is alive and well. Looking at the next three quarterbacks, Carson Wentz, Ian Book, and Chris Oladokun, one or two of these names will likely be cut, as a team will never carry four quarterbacks. Wentz is the backup quarterback.
