NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in six years, Jalen Brunson has been selected as the captain of the New York Knicks.
After joining the club in 2022, Brunson rapidly established himself as a leader, and on Tuesday, he was chosen to become the 36th captain in franchise history. Not since Lance Thomas during the 2018–19 season has the Knicks had one.
The All-Star guard will “continue to represent our organization, fans, city and his teammates with the same heart, grit and class that he has displayed each and every day since he came to New York,” Knicks President Leon Rose said in a statement, referring to Brunson as a “natural born leader.”
After joining the Knicks from Dallas, Brunson has guided the team to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs in each of his two seasons. With a 28.7 point per game average the previous season, he received his first All-Star selection and came in sixth in the NBA MVP vote.
As the Knicks captain, Brunson becomes the team’s fourth second-round selection. Willis Reed, the Hall of Fame center known as “The Captain,” is at the top of that list.
