Cody Ince, a former Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman, has died at the age of 23.
The former Iowa football player died in his home in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.
Former Iowa football offensive lineman Cody Ince was discovered deceased on Saturday. He was 23 years old.
The former Hawkeye was discovered dead at his residence in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. The cause of his death has not been confirmed, however his obituary notes that it was unexpected.
He is the heir to his fiancée Olivia Tucker, his parents Tammy and Marty, and his sister Carly.
In a statement obtained by USA Today, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz expressed tremendous regret over Cody Ince’s tragic passing. Cody was a terrific young man, a valuable buddy and participant in our program.
Ferentz then addressed Ince’s interests outside of college football: “He loved football, fishing, and hunting, and believed in the value of family and friendships.” Cody was just beginning this new chapter of his life and was set to marry.
Mary and I sincerely apologize to his fiancée, family, and all of his friends who knew and loved him. “Everyone in the football program – his coaches and his classmates – are in tears over his loss,” Ferentz tweeted.
Ince was a defender for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2018 to 2021. During his stint, he appeared in 29 games, including 10 as a starter. Ince planned to make it to the NFL, but injuries caused him to terminate his football career early.
While playing for Iowa, Ince was even acknowledged by the Big Ten Conference. Ince got an honorable mention at the 2020 Individual Awards, gaining widespread acclaim in the college football community.
“I had the honor of knowing and playing with Cody during my time at the University of Iowa,” Tyrone Tracy Jr., a Purdue wide receiver, said on Ince’s memorial page Tuesday morning. “He was not only a great teammate, but also an amazing person!” He was often joking, yet he took his fieldwork seriously, which I admired. He usually brought deer jerky or sunflower nuts, and he made sure I had plenty.
