Famous dirt late model racer announces retirement following the 2019 season, right after collecting up his 840th career win

Billy Moyer began this racing venture in 1977. He has since won 840 feature films, setting a record.

This weekend, the 61-year-old will compete in the World 100 at the renowned Eldora Speedway. The race weekend’s first main event took place last night.

Moyer placed 19th in group A. The invert aided him in the heat race, and he drove it to victory in heat five.

The heat victory sent him to the front row for the first of two 25-lap main races on Thursday night. Moyer led flag to flag, drove away from the field, and secured the victory.

In victory lane, Moyer said that 2019 will be his final year behind the wheel. He’s spent the past 42 years driving a race vehicle.

Moyer is presently running his own race team out of his Batesville, Arkansas race shop.

It’s important remembering that Moyer had already retired from the sport. Back in 2015, he said ahead of the Knoxville Late Model Nationals that he would “still be a huge part of the sport he loves.” But not in the same capacity as behind the wheel.”

That did not work out. Moyer got the virus and returned to his seat. He won for the sixth match in 2019, most recently last night.

Billy Moyer announces his impending retirement.
“I’d say this is the last one,” Billy Moyer told DirtonDirt in victory lane at Eldora Speedway, referring about his final World 100 appearance.
“I said earlier this year, ‘This has got to be the end of it.'”

“Unless a fairy godmother narrative comes along in which I am the driver in some manner. Without having to perform all the labor and pay all the costs, as I do in this contract.”

“[If it occurs], I may carry on. But it’s challenging. I have done that for a long time. And it’s been good!

“But there has to be a point where enough is enough. It’s a lot of work out there at the age of 61. I attempt to stay in shape. But 100 laps around here takes a long time.”

Moyer is a six-time World 100 winner in Eldora, having won in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000, and 2010. He’s also won the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora twice, in 1998 and 2010.
The dirt late model crown jewel dirt event at Eldora Speedway will continue for two more days.
