Done Deal: Just in Torquay United confirm to finally re-sign 20-year-old after impressive performances

After just five games, he has already done enough to extend his one-year deal.

After a strong start to the season, Torquay United moved swiftly to extend the contract of talented left wing back Matt Carson, a former Southampton and Northern Ireland under-19 player, by one year.

The 20-year-old left the Saints to join Torquay, where he opened the National League South season with a deflected effort from outside the area against Enfield Town on the first day of play.

And after just five games, the club’s new board and manager Paul Wotton were so thrilled with his performances down the left side that they extended his one-year deal.

It serves as yet another illustration of how the situation has altered since the Bryan Consortium took over. It’s easy: when you discover new talent, you safeguard it.

Wotton stated ahead of Aveley’s home game this afternoon: “Matty joined on a one-year deal and has had a strong start to the season. We’ve extended his contract because we think he’s a really good young talent. Although he still has a lot to learn, we love having him around and he has a lot to give Torquay United as a young player. He is a great prospect. For him and us, it provides security.
