Ryan Mallett, a former Houston Texans quarterback, died in an accidental drowning.
Ryan Mallett, a former Houston Texans quarterback, died at the age of 35 from an accidental drowning. Mallett was swimming with a group of people on a beach in Destin, Florida, when six of them had trouble returning to shore. Mallett went underwater and did not emerge. When Destin Beach safety staff arrived, three lifeguards had hauled Mallett out of the ocean, and he was no longer breathing. Lifesaving procedures were undertaken before Mallett was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where he was declared dead.

Since June 15th, rip currents have resulted in ten drownings on beaches in Alabama and Florida. Flags indicating the amount of hazard are displayed near the sea on the beach. That that day, there was a yellow sign indicating a “medium hazard.” Some days, they have hoisted red flags indicating a “high hazard” and double red flags indicating that “no swimmers are allowed in the water.”

In the days after the drowning, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement declaring “[there was] no indication of dangerous conditions” in response to claims that riptides may have had a role in Mallett’s death. They went on to say:

“It just seems to be a tragic accident and not something to do with the conditions of the surf or tides or currents.”

Mallett played seven seasons in the NFL. He was picked by the Patriots in 2011 and then traded to the Houston Texans in 2014. He spent two seasons with the Texans, in 2014 and 2015. After starting the 2014 season as the backup quarterback for Ryan Fitzpatrick, he was given the opportunity to start in November. In his second game as a starter, he injured his pectoral muscle, ending his season. The next season, the Texans were featured in HBO’s “Hard Knocks” docuseries, in which Mallett lost his quarterback job to Brian Hoyer during training camp.

The presentation includes an odd scenario in which he skipped a rehearsal due to oversleeping. In his stint with the Texans, he passed for 1,170 yards and 119 completions. He recorded five touchdowns and six interceptions. Mallett would have the opportunity to start four games. After Mallett missed a flight for a game against the Miami Dolphins, the Texans dismissed him a few weeks later. He went on to play a few seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring. For the last few years, Mallett has been coaching high school football.
