Announcement: Dragons Closing in on Deal to Sign Storm Star to replace Hunt as details of Flanno spray revealed

Storm star Tyran Wishart has been floated as a potential replacement for Dragons skipper Ben Hunt amid doubts around his long-term future.

Hunt and Wishart are both off-contract at the end of 2025, while the Dragons skipper who has previously asked for a release to return to Queensland, was pictured in a heated exchange with coach Shane Flanagan after their loss to the Eels.

Ben Hunt’s Uncertain Future

“I spoke to Flanno this afternoon and I said what were you saying to Ben Hunt?” Rothfield said on NRL 360.

“What was that conversation? It looked pretty nasty.

“He said it was a normal after game thing. Flanno thought he should have gone left with one play. He went right and was waving his arms.

“He insists the relationship is as secure as ever.”

Despite the assurance, Rothfield believes the Dragons privately are open to parting ways with Hunt as they have a suitable long-term replacement given he is close to the end of his career.

“He (Hunt) is getting on and I believe if they had another option and could do a swap, I don’t think they would stand in the way of Ben Hunt wanting to go back to Queensland,” Rothfield said.

The Move for Tyran Wishart

In light of the uncertainty surrounding Hunt, the Dragons have turned their attention to Tyran Wishart, a versatile player who has impressed during his time with the Melbourne Storm. Wishart, the son of former Illawarra Steelers and St George Dragons great Rod Wishart, has shown his ability to play multiple positions, including hooker, halfback, and fullback, making him a valuable asset for any team.

The potential signing of Wishart is seen as a strategic move by the Dragons to bolster their squad and ensure they have a capable playmaker should Hunt’s departure become a reality. Wishart’s versatility and potential make him an attractive option for the Dragons, who are looking to build a competitive team for the future.

What Wishart Brings to the Dragons

Tyran Wishart has been a part of the Melbourne Storm system, known for its rigorous development program and producing top-tier talent. His time at the Storm has seen him develop into a reliable and adaptable player, capable of stepping into various roles as needed. Wishart’s ability to read the game, coupled with his solid defensive skills and playmaking ability, would be a significant addition to the Dragons.

If the deal goes through, Wishart could find himself taking on a key role within the Dragons’ squad, potentially filling the void left by Hunt. His familiarity with the culture and history of the Dragons, given his father’s legacy with the club, could also help him quickly integrate and become a fan favorite.
