Announcement: Raiders Make Intriguing Contract Proposal to Sign $22.4 Million Quarterback

Third-string quarterback Trey Lance is the quarterback whose future with Dallas is in question. Lance had a rough preseason this year, especially in the last matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, where he threw five interceptions. Despite the horrific performance, he still managed to make the 53-man roster.

The Raiders’ Quarterback Situation

The team going after Lance is the Las Vegas Raiders, who have been in a quarterback crisis since trading former starter Derek Carr to the New Orleans Saints. The proposal has Las Vegas giving Dallas a late-round draft pick, along with a sixth-rounder in exchange for the quarterback. While Lance’s value has dropped, going to the Raiders, whose receivers consist of Davante Adams and Jacoby Myers, could be the spark he needs in his career.

While there is a good chance Las Vegas will try to snag a quarterback in next year’s draft, bringing in a mobile, young quarterback with potential like Lance could help shape their offense for years to come. Now, the Raiders seem to be betting on Lance’s untapped potential.

Trey Lance’s Untapped Potential

Lance was the third pick of the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers and was believed to be the next great quarterback in norther California. However, he was unable to produce for San Francisco, and was traded to the Cowboys last season after Brock Purdy took over the starting role. He has still been unable to produce with Dallas, which has left for speculation of a new team in the near future for the young quarterback.

For the Raiders, signing Lance would offer them a high-upside, low-risk option at quarterback. While Garoppolo could start in the short term, Lance would be groomed as the quarterback of the future, giving the Raiders a chance to transition smoothly should Garoppolo’s injuries resurface.

In addition, Lance would have the chance to work alongside playmakers such as Davante Adams and Josh Jacobs, two players who could significantly enhance his development. Having a strong supporting cast around him would allow Lance to grow without the pressure of having to carry the team immediately.

The Cowboys’ Perspective

For the Dallas Cowboys, moving Trey Lance would not come as a complete surprise. With Dak Prescott entrenched as the starter and Cooper Rush firmly in place as the backup, Lance’s chances of getting meaningful playing time in Dallas are slim. Trading him to the Raiders would give the Cowboys some flexibility and potentially recoup assets that could strengthen other areas of their roster.

While Lance may have been viewed as a long-term developmental option for Dallas, the opportunity to cash in on his potential via this trade with the Raiders could be appealing, especially if the compensation is significant.

For Trey Lance, a move to Las Vegas would provide a fresh start and the opportunity to compete for a starting role in the near future. Though Garoppolo would likely be the starter in the short term, Lance could take over if Garoppolo faces injuries or struggles with performance. The $22.4 million figure attached to Lance’s potential contract also indicates that the Raiders are serious about investing in him as part of their future.
