‘Big Trouble’ – Rangers facing big trouble after controversy v Dundee Utd

James McFadden believes Emmanuel Adegboyega’s challenge on Connor Barron did not justify a red card in Rangers’ 1-0 victory over Dundee United on Sunday (15 September).

The 20-year-old centre-back was exposed to a VAR review at Tannadice after a powerful foul on the Gers midfielder, and referee Don Robertson cautioned him for the incident.

While contact higher up could have meant “big trouble” for Barron, McFadden is sure that the referee made the correct choice not to send Adegboyega off in the first half.

During a live interview with Sky Sports on Sunday (15 September, 12:57pm), he stated, “I’m not surprised by his speed.” I don’t think it will result in a red card because he catches him on the foot.

“If he catches him any higher, on the ankle, it will most likely result in a red card.” In any event, it is a bad tackle. If that number is larger, he, as well as Connor Barron, will be in serious trouble since there is a lot of force behind it. However, the contact is on the top of the foot.

Dundee United lucky to keep 11 players v Rangers?

Adegboyega’s challenge on Barron was clearly questionable, and the player would have had little recourse if VAR had converted the yellow card to a red.

His manager, Jim Goodwin, was visibly concerned about his defender following the challenge, having hooked him before halftime and replaced him with Vicko Sevelj.

There has already been a lot of discussion over the contentious ruling, but the most important fact is that Barron was not injured and was able to continue fighting the Tangerines.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been an impressive addition to Philippe Clement’s team, joining from Aberdeen this summer and starting all five Scottish Premiership matches this season.

Despite not playing during the international break, his performance has earned him a surprising call-up to Scotland’s national squad. His absence would be a significant loss.
