An intriguing trade scenario has just surfaced for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, aiming to make room for the young David Reinbacher.

In my opinion, this is a good thing, but Reinbacher’s name has flown completely under the radar during the Canadiens’ 2024 training camp, while Logan Mailloux and Lane Hutson steal the spotlight.

All the same, Reinbacher is still a recent 5th overall pick, yet most observers believe he’s not necessarily in contention for a spot on the Canadiens’ regular lineup this fall.

The reality is there are few “seats” available.

The first pairing will likely be Kaiden Guhle and Mike Matheson, the second Lane Hutson and David Savard, leaving Arber Xhekaj, Logan Mailloux, Justin Barron, Jayden Struble, and Reinbacher seemingly competing for the remaining spots on defense.

A trade to make room for David Reinbacher on defense?

Journalist Eric Engels recently suggested that the Canadiens’ management would like to see David Reinbacher play some games in the NHL this season.

But how? This would likely involve a trade.

“What seems more logical to me, however, is a scenario where Reinbacher comes to play in the NHL after spending a few months in Laval.A scenario where a spot opens up following a trade that sends David Savard elsewhere at the deadline if the Canadiens are no longer in contention, for instance.”

Personally, I still think it would be a huge mistake to remove David Savard as Lane Hutson’s defensive partner, and it would be a mistake to trade Savard (even for a first-round pick).

He will be an incredible asset in helping Hutson or Mailloux succeed.

However, if management really wants to make a place for Reinbacher, there aren’t exactly 32 options available.

This will be a fascinating situation to watch over the coming months, and don’t be surprised if a trade is eventually made to open up a spot for the young Reinbacher.
