So Sad: Black bear attacks child at campground near Yellowstone National Park

A 3-year-old child was assaulted by a black bear inside her tent at a campground near Yellowstone National Park, Montana officials say.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) reported that the private campground in Red Lodge was ordered to evacuate late Sunday due to an incident.

The organization reported that a bear assaulted a child in a tent. The victim was sent to a medical facility in Billings.

Additional information on her status was not immediately available.

FWP said that a black bear was “captured and euthanized” at the site and believes it was “involved in the incident.”

A wildlife official told The Associated Press that the child that was attacked was three years old.

Red Lodge is located just north of the Wyoming-Montana boundary, close to Yellowstone National Park.

“There were attractants in the area,” game warden Randy Hutzenbiler added, which can include food and unsecured waste.

The wildlife organization suggests storing food, waste, and scented items outside tents and in bear-resistant containers or vehicles.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
