St. Louis will have some tough decisions to make throughout the 2024 campaign

The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t started the season as well as they would like.

St. Louis significantly expanded its starting rotation and bullpen this offseason in an effort to build on a disastrous 2023 season. The Cardinals suffered one of their worst seasons in recent memory last year, and they never appeared to be at full strength.

The Cardinals haven’t played as well as they wanted, but they still have a lot of skill and should find success, especially with some key players returning from injury. While this is true, if the Cardinals are unable to turn things around, it would not be surprising to see them sell again.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer has prepared a list of Major League Baseball teams’ top needs and potential trade options. He indicated that the Minnesota Twins needed pitching and, shockingly, proposed Cardinals pitcher Kyle Gibson as an alternative.

“Rather, it’s the back end of the rotation that should have the Twins worried,” he added. “While Pablo López and Joe Ryan have done well in the top two places, Minnesota’s remaining three starts have an 8.25 ERA. It’s a byproduct of losing Sonny Gray to free agency, and it will have to be addressed someday.

“Potential Solutions include Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, Paul Blackburn, and Kyle Gibson. The most famous names here are Wood, Stripling, and, in particular, Gibson, who pitched for the Twins for the first seven years of his career. But the most fascinating is Blackburn.”

Although the Cardinals may become sellers if they struggle, it would be surprising to see them trade away pitching. St. Louis’ biggest problem has been its rotation, and the team has made a concerted attempt to add veterans to help them.

A transfer should not be ruled out, but the Cardinals’ rotation will only be depleted further if they are entirely out of contention by the deadline.
