The Alabama Crimson Tide’s exclusion is somewhat justified. Both Alabama’s quarterback and the Tide’s right tackle slot are devoid of a proven player. When using the Transfer Portal to assemble their squad, the Crimson Tide was more picky than many other teams. LSU produced the best 2025 portal class, according to 247Sports. Oklahoma was ranked No. 12, and Ole Miss was ranked No. 4. The No. 21 ranking went to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In contrast to Crawford’s prediction, Phil Steele’s position rankings offer a more comprehensive and in-depth analysis of college football offensive. Alabama is ranked low at only quarterback in Steele’s four offense position group rankings (tight ends and receivers are grouped together). At No. 36, Steele has the quarterback group of the Tide. His top four picks are Oklahoma (No. 4), South Carolina (No. 3), Texas (No. 2), and LSU (No. 1). Ole Miss is ranked No. 41 for quarterbacks, and Steele leads Crawford’s other best offensive.
Undoubtedly, having a successful quarterback is crucial, but how much more significant is a strong offensive line? Alabama is ranked as the ninth-best offensive line position group in the FBS by Phil Steele. Crawford’s top five are far lower: South Carolina at No. 69, Ole Miss at No. 54, LSU at No. 43, Texas at No. 26, Oklahoma at No. 35, and LSU at No.
Texas is at No. 5, Alabama at No. 4, and LSU at No. 3 in Steele’s receiving rankings. South Carolina is ranked No. 45, Oklahoma No. 35, and Ole Miss No. 17. In terms of running back groups, Steele ranks Alabama seventh. Texas, at number three, and Oklahoma, at number five, are above the tide. Ole Miss is ranked No. 63, South Carolina is ranked No. 47, and LSU is ranked No. 12.
Overall Alabama Crimson Tide Offense Rates Higher.
Using the four offensive position groups and the Steele rankings, only Alabama and Texas have three top-10 ranked units. LSU and Oklahoma have two ranked in the top ten. Ole Miss and South Carolina have one each.
Given that his five best SEC offenses will need to score more points than Alabama, Crawford may be right about his predictions for both scoring offense and total offense. Texas has a linebacker with the same high rating as Oklahoma’s defensive line. However, only Alabama is ranked in Steele’s top 10 for all three defensive position groupings out of the six SEC schools. Although the Crimson Tide defense will let games be won with less offensive output than Crawford’s five teams, Alabama should do well in terms of points per possession.
The Alabama Crimson Tide will have no middle-of-the-pack SEC football offense in the 2025 season.
