The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant move to bolster their lineup, signing former Toronto Blue Jays star, Whit Merrifield, to a one-year contract with an option for 2025 ¹. This move comes on the heels of the Phillies’ highest payroll in team history ².
Merrifield, 35, brings positional versatility, a right-handed bat, and speed to the Phillies. Last season, he hit 11 home runs and had 67 RBIs. He is a three-time All-Star and has 201 career stolen bases ¹.
The Phillies also traded pitcher Kaleb Ort to the Baltimore Orioles to make room for Merrifield on the 40-man roster ¹.
The team has also been rumored to be interested in signing star pitcher Jordan Montgomery on a short-term contract ². Montgomery, a left-hander, is coming off his best season in the league, posting an ERA of 3.20 across 30 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers ².
Additionally, the Phillies have been linked to Japanese phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who could give the Phillies a “super rotation” ³.
