Ruud van Nistelrooy holds negotiations with Burnley about the head coach role.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has met with Burnley and is in line to become the club’s new head coach.
Burnley are looking for a replacement for Vincent Kompany, who was selected as Bayern Munich head coach last month despite the Lancashire club’s relegation from the Premier League.
Burnley is considering many candidates, including Van Nistelrooy, after interviewing former Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior. Assistant coach Craig Bellamy, who was appointed in caretaker command following Kompany’s resignation, Scott Parker, and West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan are potential options. Frank Lampard had earlier emerged as a possibility, but now seems unlikely to succeed Kompany.
Kompany led Burnley to promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge, finishing first in the Championship with 101 points. However, the club was demoted from the top level the following season after earning only 24 points from 38 games.
Van Nistelrooy was PSV Eindhoven’s head coach for the 2022-23 season. The 47-year-old won the Dutch Cup with PSV but quit before the end of the season, citing a lack of support from the club.In May, Van Nistelrooy expressed his ambition to return to management and experience the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga, three divisions in which he previously played.
Before returning to Eindhoven as manager, the former Manchester United striker coached PSV youth teams and served as an assistant coach for the Netherlands national team twice.
Van Nistelrooy scored 384 goals during his career, which included stints at PSV, Real Madrid, Malaga, and Hamburg. However, he was most prolific at Manchester United, netting 150 goals in five seasons.
