Three free agents. The Saints should consider signing now.
Not all valuable free agents are signed before to OTAs and minicamp. There is still enough of value to be obtained, and the New Orleans Saints should surely consider capitalizing on it.
There isn’t much the team can do with $11-12 million in cap space in 2024, but it’s enough to make a move or two for players who may become valuable contributors. Here are a few players that New Orleans might consider signing.
Justin Simmons S
The Saints’ defensive backfield is one of their stronger groupings. Marshon Lattimore and Tyrann Mathieu lead the way, followed by emerging players Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor, and newcomer Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Mathieu’s safety position is the question mark. Jonathan Abram or Jordan Howden will most certainly start there, but why settle for less when a talent like Justin Simmons is available?
The former Denver Broncos safety was named second-team All-Pro in three straight seasons and four of the last five. He’s one of the NFL’s better safety, and he and Mathieu would immediately become one of the league’s best tandems. The one issue might be something beyond New Orleans’ control. Simmons may be waiting for the ideal club, which would undoubtedly be a significant Super Bowl contender. The Saints aren’t that.
Lawrence Guy DL
Another one of the Saints’ most pressing needs is at defensive tackle. Bryan Bresee showed promise in his debut season, but there isn’t much following him. Lawrence Guy spent most of his time as a defensive end for the New England Patriots, but he has also played defensive tackle. The 34-year-old could come in and serve as a consistent rotational piece in the Saints’ interior at a low cost.
Hunter Renfrow WR
Renfrow and Derek Carr have a fantastic relationship and a track record of previous success. The Saints should give Rashid Shaheed and A.T. Perry a chance to prove themselves and develop as reliable receiving options behind Chris Olave. However, having Renfrow would offer a greater level to the receiving corps.
