Ted Cann, the West Brom goalkeeper, has agreed to a new contract and hopes to duplicate the combination.
After agreeing to a new contract with Albion, goalkeeper prospect Ted Cann hopes to follow in the footsteps of Alex Palmer and Josh Griffiths.
Cann, 23, has signed a new one-year contract with The Hawthorns after his previous terms expired this summer.
His new contract contains an option for an additional 12 months in Albion’s favour, should the club choose to exercise it.
Cann, an academy graduate, has been a member of the Baggies’ senior goalkeeping group since Carlos Corberan took over a few years ago, and even before that.
He trains alongside first-choice keeper Palmer and deputy Griffiths under senior goalie coach Marcos Abad, whom Corberan hired last summer. Palmer and Griffiths are both Albion youth set-up alumni, and Cann has recently agreed to new terms with the club.
Cann, who was born in the North West but has yet to make his senior Baggies debut, said: “I have another year to show myself here, and I believe I’ve improved significantly.
I know I didn’t play many games, but Marcos, the manager, has given me positive comments in training, and we have a terrific goalkeeping squad here.
“I, Josh, and Palms are tight on and off the pitch. Palms performed admirably last season, and I see both of them rising through the academy and making it to the first team, and I want to follow in their footsteps.”
It remains to be seen whether Albion will send Cann out on loan for senior experience for the upcoming season. To date, the former Liverpool youth, who joined the club in 2017, has had three spells in non-league.
He spent two spells with National League Yeovil, making seven appearances, before moving on to AFC Telford United and Leamington in the National League North. Cann got his most exposure in the latter, making 19 appearances the previous season.
Cann shared his thoughts on his growth: “I made massive improvements and I’m excited to see where that takes me this year, whether that’s here or out on loan playing games, but we’ll see.”
The Baggies have a wealth of goalkeeping skill and have made great progress through the youth ranks in recent years.
In addition to Palmer, 27, Griffiths, 22, and Cann, the young ranks include highly regarded duo Ben Cisse, 18, and Ronnie Hollingshead, 19, who have previously played for England and Wales youth teams, respectively.
