Report: Virginia Tech Hokies star is out due to dangerous injury

Elizabeth Kitley, a Virginia Tech player, will miss the ACC tournament due to an injury.
Coach Kenny Brooks announced on the Virginia Tech Sports Network’s pregame show that center Elizabeth Kitley will not play in the ACC tournament after suffering a left leg injury in the Hokies’ season-finale loss at Virginia last weekend.

Kitley will be reevaluated following the conference tournament. This season, the three-time ACC Player of the Year and The Athletic first-team All-American averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds a game for No. 11 Virginia Tech (23-6, 14-4 ACC).

Kitley seemed to sustain a non-contact left knee injury in the third quarter of last Sunday’s loss and returned to the locker room with a trainer. She reappeared later that quarter and walked to the bench unassisted. However, Brooks was noticeably disturbed after the game.

“I don’t know Kitley’s status and to be honest with you, that’s where my mind is,” after the match. “I’m not going to be able to give you guys anything just out of respect for her.”

Kitley led the Hokies to their first Final Four last season and chose to return to Blacksburg for her fifth year despite having COVID-19. Kitley and point guard Georgia Amoore have held down both ends of the court for Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech earned its first ACC tournament title in 2023, followed by their first ACC regular-season crown in 2024, thanks to the outstanding pair.

In Kitley’s absence, freshman Clara Stack received her first career start. This season, the 6-foot-5 center has averaging three points and four rebounds in 12 minutes per game for the Hokies.

The Hokies were projected as the second seed in The Athletic’s most recent NCAA Tournament bracket projection.
