Breaking: Yankees Agree Deal To Sign Fan Favorite’s Valued at $128 Million In Proposed Contract

The goal of the New York Yankees’ winter roster additions was to perhaps improve upon their 2023 campaign, which ended with a poor 82-80 record. They’ll need to spend a lot of money in order to sign outfielder Juan Soto to a long-term contract next winter. What about Gleyber Torres, the infielder?

According to Spotrac, he will also earn $14.2 million in 2024 while wearing the pinstripes and is scheduled to become a free agent next November. Tim Britton provided contract estimates for a few players who will become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season as part of an article series at The Athletic. “An exercise in player valuation, not commentary on the likelihood of an extension being signed,” he took care to clarify.

With respect to Torres, his projected deal amounted to $68 million over four years. Based on Spotrac’s estimation of market worth, that would represent a $60 million reduction. They are estimating a seven-year, $128 million transaction, with an annual market value of $18.3 million.

Torres Is Hoping to Be a Yankee for Life

On March 5, Torres was interviewed by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic at New York’s spring training facilities in Tampa, Florida. The second baseman was insistent about wanting to play his entire career in the Bronx when asked about the status of his next deal.

Torres remarked, “I always say, I feel (at) home right now.” He went on, “I have been acquainted with this organization since 2016.” I’m feeling well. I am familiar with all of them. You never want to leave your residence as a player. I’m doing well right now. My lifelong dream is to be a Yankee. That’s one of my objectives. See what transpires.

At the 2016 trade deadline, Torres signed a contract with the Yankees. In exchange for sending Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs, New York got four players. The Yankees also acquired Adam Warren, Billy McKinney, and Rashad Crawford in addition to Torres.

The 27-year-old’s first two big-league seasons were very successful when he made his MLB debut in 2018. He scored a lot of points and was chosen for both All-Star Games. As a rookie, Torres had a.820 OPS, 24 home runs, and 77 RBI. In 2019, he continued that success with a.871 OPS, 38 home runs, and 90 RBI.

It wasn’t until 2023 that Torres concluded a season with an OPS of.800 or above. That total, combined with 25 home runs, 28 doubles, 68 RBI, and 90 runs scored, ended up exactly at.800. In addition, he recorded 13 thefts, marking his third season in a row with at least 10 thefts.

Brian Cashman Doesn’t Sound as Sure About That

Torres has made it obvious that he wants to play with the Yankees for the long run, but Brian Cashman, general manager, is sensibly keeping details under wraps.

On February 16, he spoke about Torres’ contract predicament. According to Cashman, via WFAN, “He’s our second baseman for this year.” “Haven’t discussed anything other than that in conversation.”

It appears doubtful that there will be a preseason extension with Opening Day quickly approaching. But may during the regular season something come together? “Who knows? Cashman responded, “I’m not sure about that option. “There haven’t been any discussions on that as of yet.”

The upcoming months could see a lot of changes. Though he still has hopes of signing a new contract with the Yankees, it appears that Torres will be available on the free market come wintertime.
