Announcement: Ex-Washington Quarterback RGIII Post His Endorsement As Commanders Close In On Deal To Sign Super Bowl WR
The Washington Commanders are getting another chance to trade for Sign Super Bowl WR and it’s a chance former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III has urged his old team not to waste.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Aiyuk requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, July 16. The Niners have not been prepared to negotiate since May, therefore Aiyuk has respectfully asked out.
Shortly after the trade request was made official, ex-Washington quarterback RGIII turned to X to post his endorsement of the probable move. Griffin believes that getting Aiyuk would benefit 2024 NFL draft No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels, who is expected to be the franchise quarterback for the Commanders.
Griffin once faced the same duty and stated, “Giving Jayden Daniels Terry McLaurin, Brandon Aiyuk, Jahan Dotson, Luke McCaffrey, Brian Robinson Jr., Austin Ekeler, and Zach Ertz would FEED FAMILIES in DC.”
The Commanders’ desire to trade for Aiyuk is unstoppable this summer. Because of his relationship with Daniels, the player is open to a move, and the team has previously spoken with the 49ers.
Persuading the Niners to make a deal will be difficult. Not when last season’s Super Bowl runner-ups appear to be determined to keep Aiyuk around.
No End in Sight to Brandon Aiyuk Trade Rumors
Aiyuk feels like a logical fit for the Commanders. Especially considering his time playing with Daniels at Arizona State in 2019.
Aiyuk has expressed interest in a reunion, but the 49ers are not obligated to accommodate his request. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco has informed other clubs that they will not trade unhappy wide receiver Brandon Ayiuk.
Schefter emphasized that the 49ers have historically had players like Deebo Samuel and Robbie Gould request moves before reaching agreements. The 49ers aim to keep Brandon Ayiuk rather than trade him.
Maybe the 49ers won’t budge, but what’s for sure is rumors about a trade involving Aiyuk and the Commanders aren’t going away any time soon. The possibility ought to at least stay on the table because adding Aiyuk to an already intriguing collection of skill players would equip Daniels with one of the more dynamic supporting casts in the NFL.
Griffin knows the value of a rookie signal-caller being surrounded by the right weapons.
Robert Griffin III Knows the Value of a Strong Supporting Cast
Washington traded away the farm to make RG3 the second player overall in 2012, but the franchise surrounded him with plenty of quality. They include wide receivers Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss, and Josh Morgan, as well as running back Alfred Morris and tight end Fred Davis.
Daniels will be surrounded by an arguably more powerful group. His supporting cast includes wideouts Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, running backs Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson Jr., and tight end Zach Ertz.
Adding Aiyuk to the mix would transform a deep bunch into a formidable collection of flexible and possibly explosive playmakers. According to Schefter (h/t George Carmi of Full Press NFL), the Commanders inquired about a trade with the 49ers this offseason but did not proceed with it.
According to Spotrac.com, the Commanders have $36,216,567 in salary cap space, allowing them to reconsider their decision. This makes sense if Aiyuk can get the 49ers to move.
Landing a QB-friendly target Daniels knows well would give the rookie the best chance to quickly meet lofty expectations.
