Scott Starzyk, a five-star kicker from The Woodlands in Texas, confirmed his commitment to Iowa on Thursday. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Starzyk, the top kicker in the class of 2025, chose Iowa over Syracuse, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, and a number of other colleges.
Starzyk is on a full-ride scholarship.
Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods is regarded as one of the best special teams coaches in the country, so hearing him tell Starzyk he is a key priority meant a lot to the Texas native.
“It’s great how detailed Coach Woods is with the specialists and every decision he makes, also the consistency within the program due to Coach Ferentz’s long tenure as head coach,” he told me.
Starzyk is the thirteenth member of Iowa’s 2025 class.
The Impact: Starzyk’s decision to join the Hawkeyes is a major boost for Iowa’s special teams squad. The Hawkeyes seldom grant full-ride scholarships to high school specialists, so Starzyk’s acceptance demonstrated how much the Hawkeyes wanted him and how desperately Iowa needed a kicker in this class. Drew Stevens has two years of eligibility remaining, so if he were to continue at Iowa for his senior season, the Hawkeyes would have Starzyk.
After redshirting, he will fight for a starting slot with Tripp Woody in his sophomore year. Starzyk will have time to mature and grow stronger behind Stevens, and the Hawkeyes will put him on a heavy weight regimen once he arrives on campus to add mass to his frame and boost his power. Who is next? Iowa is currently awaiting decisions from five-star defensive tackle Iose Epenesa and four-star wide receiver Terrence Smith. It is still quiet on those fronts, but Iowa is in the final group for both.
