Sad News: Commanders and Dan Quinn fear the worst as rookie dealt crushing blow after sensational summer
This was a crushing blow to the rookie.
No NFL team can claim an injury-free training camp. Some have better luck than others, but that’s part of the game.
The Washington Commanders are actively addressing health concerns. Head coach Dan Quinn and his team seek to maintain the current status quo throughout their first regular season as the franchise’s leader.
Arguably the most upsetting injury concern involves a young rookie who made a big impression this summer. Jordan Magee was viewed as a development project with the potential to become a factor in the long run with further improvement. The linebacker’s impressive transition from college to the pros led to early success and notable reps.
Magee demonstrated his explosiveness and physicality over the spring, vaulting into the lead backup role behind Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu while Jamin Davis transitioned to an edge rusher. The unanticipated and welcome progress came to an abrupt halt due to a complication during Preseason Week 1 versus the New York Jets.
Commanders LB Jordan Magee looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines
This injury was cloaked in mystery. Except for Magee’s absence from their second warmup game against the Miami Dolphins, the Commanders revealed little else. Quinn clarified this at his media appearance on Monday. The news was not excellent.
Quinn stated that Magee underwent surgery for a knee meniscus problem. He has not been ruled out of the full campaign. However, there is no timescale for his comeback as the former Temple star embarks on a lengthy recovery process.
The Commanders will most likely put Magee on injured reserve to begin the campaign. It is hardly the end of the world, but it is a disheartening outcome for someone who has worked so hard to establish himself as a potentially vital piece of the puzzle in 2024.
This will cause the Commanders to change their course of action. According to Quinn, Davis might see time at the defensive second level on first and second downs, depending on the schematic alignment. Players like Anthony Pittman, Mykal Walker, and Keandre Jones might see their opportunities improve. There’s also a potential general manager Adam Peters will sign another linebacker off the waiver wire if the appropriate opportunity arises.
As for Magee? He’ll be working on returning as soon as possible, with the same tenacity he demonstrated throughout his initial training phase in Washington.
The first-year pro did an excellent job of adapting to Quinn’s philosophy, earning accolades from head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. for his work ethic. The No. 139 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is making a name for himself, regardless of the length of his absence.
Washington’s medical staff will give him as much time as he needs. To prevent unnecessary issues, err on the side of caution. Given Magee’s physical stature and age, everything should go smoothly.
This is a setback for Magee. How he replies will reveal much about his inner desire and character.
