The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is mourning the loss of a key driver and several other notable figures in the drag racing community.
Scotty Richardson, a five-time NHRA Sportsman-racing world champion, passed away on August 14 at the age of 54. Richardson was a beloved figure in the NHRA, known for his incredible driving skills and his dedication to the sport. He won five world championships in the Super Gas and Super Comp categories and was a fixture at NHRA events for over three decades.
Richardson’s passing has sent shockwaves through the NHRA community, with tributes pouring in from fans, drivers, and officials alike. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and will always be remembered as one of the greatest Sportsman drivers in NHRA history.
In addition to Richardson’s passing, the NHRA has also announced the passing of several other notable figures. Dan Olson, a longtime NHRA nitro-racing crew chief and former NHRA Director, passed away recently. Olson was a highly respected figure in the NHRA, known for his expertise and his contributions to the sport.
Other notable figures who have passed away include Martee Xakellis, a pioneering female driver who competed in the NHRA’s Top Fuel and Funny Car categories; Gary Fratus, a longtime NHRA announcer and journalist; Neil Britt, a respected NHRA engine builder and tuner; Lizzy Musi, a rising star in the NHRA’s Pro Modified category; and Roger Richards, a veteran NHRA driver and crew chief.
The NHRA community is in mourning, but it will continue to celebrate the lives and achievements of these incredible individuals. Their contributions to the sport will never be forgotten, and they will always be remembered as true legends of drag racing.
