New Cowboys Arrival Kaiir Elam Already Off to Great Start With Dallas.
When it comes to one of their offseason additions, the Dallas Cowboys hope that a change of scenery is all that is necessary to turn around the career of a highly-touted talent.
Dallas was quite aggressive this summer in its search for suitable additions to its roster because of needs up and down the roster. The Cowboys’ front office gave first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball to rely on as he executes his system, whether that was through trades, free agent signings, or the draft.
The Buffalo Bills had great expectations for the SEC defensive back when they selected CB Kaiir Elam from the University of Florida with the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Sadly for Buffalo, Elam was simply too unreliable to be completely trusted on the outside, even if he displayed glimpses of what made him a first-round pick during his time with the Bills.
The Cowboys were able to quickly acquire the former first-round choice without having to make many trade concessions because Buffalo was unable to fully commit to Elam being “the guy” in the secondary. In exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick, Dallas got Elam and a 2025 sixth-round pick, which turned out to be Ajani Cornelius.
Elam, who is on his rookie contract, has been quite impressive since arriving. Elam fulfilling his college potential is as big of a win for the Cowboys as they could hope for, especially considering Dallas’ secondary concerns.
In a recent NFL Nation article, ESPN’s Todd Archer noted that Elam was able to keep up with the team’s receivers in coverage and intercepted many passes during OTAs and minicamp. Dallas will have really benefited from this move if he can maintain that level of performance during training camp and the regular season.
